The keel laying ceremony for the Fourth Kormoran II - Class Minehunter

news-details

The keel-laying ceremony for the fourth Kormoran II-class minehunter took place in Remontowa shipyard on July 25. This is another milestone in the implementation of this project. The ship, which will be named ORP JaskóÅ‚ka, will join the fleet of the 12th Minesweeper Squadron of the 8th FOW stationed at the Naval Port in ÅšwinoujÅ›cie

The ceremony was attended by Cdr Piotr Skóra, Head of the Maritime Technology Headquarters of the Armament Agency, Cmdr JarosÅ‚aw KukliÅ„ski, deputy commander of the 8th Coastal Defense Flotilla, Lt Cmdr SÅ‚awomir Góra, commander of the 12th Minesweeper Squadron, representatives of: Research and Development Center of the Maritime Technology Center headed by Marcin WiÅ›niewski, PGZ Stocznia Wojenna, classification society of the Polish Register of Shipping headed by Henryk Åšnie headed by the Remontowa Marine Design & Consulting design office, presidents and employees of companies belonging to the Remontowa Holding group, as well as members of the Supervisory Board of the Remontowa Shipbuilding SA

The next milestone in the implementation of this project will be the launching. This is scheduled for mid-2024. The unit will be handed over in 2026.

According to the provisions of the contract, three units will be built. The burning of sheets for the construction of the second minehunter will start in January next year. The same process for the construction of the third ship is scheduled for October 2024. Both units will be handed over in 2027.

ORP JaskóÅ‚ka is the fourth minehunter of the Kormoran II type (displacement: up to 850 t, total length 58.50 m, maximum width 10.30 m) built at the Remontowa Shipbuilding shipyard. The first prototype ship, ORP Kormoran, designed and built in the formula of research and development work, entered service in November 2017. Additionally, its operation allowed for modifications in the construction of the next serial minehunters. Thanks to them, ORP Albatros and ORP Mewa (handed over to the Employer in 2022) as well as three other contracted units will have optimal possibilities to operate in difficult hydro-meteorological conditions. The fundamental and most significant changes introduced to the serial units concern artillery armament and underwater mine countermeasure systems.

Kormoran II type minehunters are designed to search for, identify and combat sea mines as well as other objects and explosives left both in the depths of water and on the bottom of water bodies. This applies to both operations in the Polish economic zone and missions in tactical groups in the Baltic and North Seas (teams of NATO, EU or multinational coalition forces).

The design of the ship, made by the Remontowa Marine Design & Consulting design office belonging to Remontowa Holding, provides it with a very low signature of physical fields and high maneuvering parameters. Like the prototype, the production units will have a non-magnetic steel hull.
